images from the road OR be prepared when the MITM is at the wheel

we left the plantation at 06:00h on tuesday. the idea was to be up and about at 04:00h...i think we were lucky we left here when we did. i drove the first leg up to the ATL (atlanta, in case you didn't know its local appellation) which is a boring as hell 4 hour tour, but the MITM had some work to do, so i got us the hell outta dodge while he dozed worked.

(by the by, if by any chance you're looking at buying a chrysler 200, DO NOT DO IT! we rented one for the drive and it, while a smooth ride, was a drag to drive.)

moving right along, we switched drivers in the ATL and began the trek up to louisville, kentucky BECAUSE the MITM had a meeting on wednesday. yes, he could have flown up tuesday, met on wednesday and probably flown out that very night, BUT...we (read: he) decided to drive. all jokes aside, i'm glad for the chance to see more of the states and also, the MITM spends so much time flying because of work, this is a relaxing break for him.

the plan was arrive early in louisville so that he could be part of conference call in comfortable surroundings aka the hotel room, but that sooooo didn't happen. OH, the call happened, but in a corner booth of a mac donald's off the highway. sweet mary sunshine, if i EVER needed a reminder why i don't frequent mickey d's...unfortunately, i was hungry and the rest, we shall never speak of again.

the call done, we continued on.

we arrived in the city too late to wander around, so we had dinner in the hotel restaurant, Sway and decided on their delicious spicy shrimp and grits! yep, we stayed true to the south, sweet pea! and it was GREAT! (no food pictures because i didn't take any...most of the time i was too hungry to even remember to document my meal...)  the evening was slow and easy and dinner was served the same way. we easily slipped into the groove.

wednesday found the MITM heading off to his meeting that wasn't too far away from the hotel, but took long enough that the morning was shot for sightseeing. there were additional meetings and calls and emails to deal with, AND this was a business trip, so i took advantage of the downtime to just read/sleep/relax until he finished. then we had a wander around town.

the first photo is the louisville slugger factory and museum. we bought a genuine louisville slugger bat for super nana (her request) with her name inscribed and her birthdate! we bought shirts for BGM and BBC because we're goofy like that! (there's no crying in baseball for BGM and the original louisville slugger logo for BBC.)

the last two are in the old lousiville historic district. we only touched on a little of the incredible sights in this city, but the bit we did see was for the most part lovely. the reality of life in the states is that it isn't all picture perfect so, we saw those parts of the city, too. poverty is always a neighbor to wealth, but there is always hope in the faces of children. we saw that in the children getting off their school bus in the projects. i see that everywhere because i look for it and because it is the one thing that keeps me from losing faith in my country.

but, i digress...

dinner our last night in town was at z's oyster bar!  if you're ever in louisville, make sure you have dinner here! service was warm and friendly, the food delicious, and it was the perfect spot to have dinner and watch a HUGE thunderstorm soak the city!

the next morning, we took off for our return home, this time at a far more leisurely pace, first stopping in nashville, tennessee.  we booked a regular room at lowes-vanderbilt (across the street from vanderbilt university) and were surprised when we checked in to find that we'd been UPGRADED to a luxury suite!! i'm only mentioning this because it was SPECTACULAR and totally unexpected. in fact, when we inquired as to WHY, we were told because it's your lucky day!   while we waited for our room to be ready, we sat in the hotel bar, Mason's. i think this sums up our thoughts...

i have to admit, i did take pictures of the two rooms and the balcony, but after looking at them i realized that because i didn't use the panorama feature, it just looked like a lot of furniture in an oddly shaped room (check out the hotel link for professional photos).

i know that nashville is known as music city and the capital of country music, and we did drive around, but that wasn't why we were anxious to visit. if y'all have learned anything about us, then y'all know we enjoy southern cuisine! stopping here meant we could get a reservation for the same night at Husk. check out their site because i can't even begin to do it justice. in fact, i'm sighing now just remembering the evening! the restaurant is housed in a re-furbished victorian house and is a grand, yet casual, dining experience! nothing stuffy or pretentious here, i promise you.

saturday morning and room service (because it seemed the right thing to do in a luxury suite) before hitting the road for chattanooga, made famous by a variety of things, but this is one of my favorites!

by the by, there's a sign on the highway/interstate that even tells you you're in the home of the chattanooga choo choo!

during our short trip, work reared its head more than once and sort of derailed excursions around Nooga, but we know we'll visit again. dinner our last night on the road was at easy bistro & bar.  we didn't take many photos this trip. . .but next time, we'll wander along the riverfront and really see the town!

BUT, the best meal of this trip?

stopping at fresh market in savannah and picking up a baguette, some salami and cheese, and fresh flowers!

we had the wine at home already.

“What day is it?" It's today," squeaked Piglet. My favorite day," said Pooh.” ....or HOLY MOLEY, BGM IS TWO!!!

Yep, the MITM and I were out in lalaland because BGM is now TWO!!

we weren't out there for a whole month, just 4 days, but i've been a tiny bit busy. ok, maybe the MITM was busy, i've just been a tad lazy about writing. super nana asked me yesterday why i hadn't posted a birthday blog post for BGM (BabyGirlMatrix if you're new to the blog or forgot). so here are some pics!

dinosaurs ruled the day

yep, cupcakes must be eaten this way

tigger was a hit!
BBC claimed the pool early!

cali kids LOVE the water

we spent all morning saying BIG TWO DAY!!

even a loosely themed party needs theme specific plates (said every grandma ever!)
he's thinking "average speed" and she's thinking "go faster!"
cousins pausing for a very, very brief moment

super nana, BGM, and the chocolate cupcake

water tables have a very different meaning when you're 2!

best cupcakes EVER!
thank goodness for "Thomas, the Train" and netflix!

the winnie the pooh birthday party was fun, the kids had a blast and so did all of us! the last photo and video were taken the day before we left when we did our grandparents thing and watched the little ones for a few hours. (The Kid was with us, too, but she's a tween now, so i only post her pics when she says it's ok!) yep, ran them ragged (read: we were beat!) and then we all went to dinner at el cholo our all time favorite must visit whenever we're in lalaland restaurant!

right now, i'm sitting in a hotel room thinking how much i love air conditioning, so you can guess i'm somewhere in the south, just not at home! it's a work trip for the MITM and i'm the long distance driver, not in city, so i think i'll just mosey on down to the bar restaurant...and wait for him to return.

see you tomorrow back at the plantation!

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

it's wednesday and exactly 1 month since my last post!

big deal, right?

i started working on this post 3 days ago, but of course, it had a different name, but life intervened and here we are. a blogger i had just started reading a few months ago has thrown in the towel because some of his readers seem to have decided to be asshats (my choice of descriptor) and blogging stopped being fun as a result. i know that feeling! i remember when someone decided to disrupt my blog and attack me personally, and also my family. it was ugly and hurtful and we shall not revisit that time again. i still do not understand why some people feel the need to play that game and/or just be ugly, as they hide behind their computer screen.  i'll turn the page now...

i think it's time for good news.

there's a good read over at mr. moose's blog about books/literature/what you're reading. check it out when you have a moment.

the MITM is home and we're doing well here on the plantation. it's been mad hot here, but it is the Dirty South and it is summertime, so what else could it possibly be, right?  everyone around here seems to think he's on vacation, but that is so not the case.  in fact, he's sort of working right now...

The Boss
that's it for today, sweetpeas, BUT here is our moment of cuteness:

BGM is almost 2!

BBC enjoys his sundae!
xoxoxoxo for today! i'll see all y'all soon!

Monday, June 30, 2014

i'm ok

june 30th and week 3 of my 8 week recovery period.

the coconut krewe has gone home and i'm a day away from my first week on my own.  so far, so good (i know, how trite, but this time, it's really true.) captain chaos left a fridge full of food, so that made things much easier. the rule around here while i'm on my own: one thing only per day and remember average speed.

thank you all for your kind words on my last post.  y'all made me smile!

the plantation became "Camp TCM" aka Camp Taking Care of Mommy. Yes, camp counselors now have shirts.

there aren't any pics from the first week, except for one of me in pre-op that i said, if it ever saw the light of day someone would be very, very  sorry. let's just say, i was not at my best! i spent the first week home under the care of The Doc and The Dancing Lady! i'm hoping it was easy for them because all i really remember is good meals and a lot of sleeping (by me, of course).

week 2 brought captain chaos and super nana!  this week i remember a bit more, good food and my favorite See's truffles! everyone brought a bag of Camellia Red Beans which for those of you not familiar with NOLA cooking are the staple of life in Louisiana and my house! captain chaos made a pot almost immediately!

and then he made this:

SEAFOOD GUMBO!!!

yes, beyond delicious. it was fresh, it used local fish and shrimp AND did i mention it was DELICIOUS?! i'm smiling again just remembering how lovely it was. he really does know how to cook really, really well!

world cup madness hit Camp TCM with a vengeance. you might recall that The Doc and The Dancing Lady lived in spain for a few years and super nana was a resident of paris for many years, so teams are followed and games were watched! of course we watched the usa's matches! talk about exciting! i also had my first glasses of white wine in ages during the france match! (don't ask, there are lots of rituals involved for super nana)

super nana watching futbol

i love (american) football, but watching the world cup was hot damn exciting! i may have to spend a little more time during the next 4 years in preparation for the next world cup!

so there it is, that's what's been happening here for the past few weeks. i'm sort of back, but not really, so posts may be a little slower that whatever normal is on this blog!  the MITM returns soon, so i'm not on my own for too much longer.

i love all y'all! and thanks again for stopping by!

under the weather

a bit indisposed as they say, but doing ok here. the coconut krewe are staying the course with me, in shifts, so i'm in good hands. i'll be right as rain soon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE MITM!!

Another birthday spent in deepestdarkestafrica! But, another reason to have a party when  he gets home. Yes, he is OFFICIALLY old today. He even has a government issued card that says so!

 Happy 65, darlin!

Finding a path

Checking on that other site once or twice a day is working out pretty well. I did get rid of all the political preaching to the (my) choir because as all y'all know, the comments by trolls were making me crazy. And we all know I'm crazy enough now...

The MITM is back in deepestdarkestafrica, so I'm back to one dish meals that last forever, but are tasty and nutritious! (that's my story and I'm sticking to it.) It's a hassle for the first few days to just cook for one and there are a few days when  pizza delivery is a gift from on high or a quick take away from the market is haute cuisine. Then, the novelty is gone and home cooking is back on the front burner, so to speak. (I know, lame joke, but I laughed.) You'd think after all this time, I'd be used to it, but I ain't and I'm guessing that's almost a good thing.
I'm open to any suggestions re: single serving meals if any of y'all are so inclined.

By the by, loveries, I know many of you commented on my last few posts and I didn't respond. I did read them all, but I do hope all y'all will forgive my lapse in manners and know that I appreciated the time y'all took to leave a few words.

Now for a total aside, does anyone understand this new trend in commercials that seem to follow a cast off scripts from The Royal Tenenbaums or The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou? You know what I mean, all these unrelated strange characters talking to each other about the product, but I can honestly tell you I have no idea what they're marketing to me! Or is it just me? There are days when I KNOW I'm no longer the target audience for all the cool things.

So, this is my Sunday letter from the Plantation to all y'all! Enjoy your day and here's to a great week for all of us!

 Isn't this lovely?

In case you were wondering....

Things are in flux here on the plantation (as they seem to be around the world) and I'm at massive loose ends/unfocused/drifting/sort of lost and, as another blogger said, unable to write about anything other than the fact that I can't write about anything.

I love all y'all and I'll be back....

eventually.

10:31 eventually happened sooner than I thought.

It dawned on me as I posted on that other social media site that there really is far more opportunity for expression on my blog than on that other site. I keep having to remind myself that there are more kind people than not in this lovely world when I read comments or posts there. I'll check it periodically, but that is going to have to be it. I've taken the app off my phone, so no more random checking or updates.

Times a wastin' and I aim to enjoy what I have left.

(and no, I'm not sticking my head in the sand and trying to ignore the real world. I've just chosen to keep the bad news in periodicals and tv news.)

PHOTO AND MOVIE OP!!! (y'all haven't seen these 2 in ages!)

Kayak time!

I have no other words right now.

Friday, April 11, 2014

it's friday and yes, i'm coming back

i know i've been MIA, but...

i'm here now.
of course, this is just a tease post because i just wanted y'all to know i was still around and still reading and sometimes commenting, but mostly just disappearing into the background.

make sense?
no, i know it doesn't.
and yet...

anyway, proper posts are forthcoming, as i have a TON of things to share (besides birthday wishes and dear sweet maz) since the last time i was serious about posting.

(i'll have to check when that was, of course.)

now, i'm off to go shopping with the lovely Miss K.

have a lovely weekend, darlings!!

For The Dancing Lady!!!

The Dancing Lady

Today is The Dancing Lady's birthday! She has been and continues to be a delightful addition to the krewe, so join us now and wish her the best!  (i know that right now you're hearing  maz and his birthday song in your head, right?)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Monday, April 7, 2014

We missed a very important event!

The Doc
Things happen and when they do, we sometimes miss celebrating important milestones. So, join me now in wishing The Doc a very happy 41st birthday! He reads the blog, so he'll get to celebrate all over again!

And because no birthday is complete without a little Maz...

The Doc is in deepestdarkestafrica right now and probably won't have the bandwidth to see the video, but I KNOW he knows the tune!

Make it so, #2!

I need a favor

Y'all know that despite my attempts to be Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah, GA it ain't so, ain't never gonna happen, end of story. I am the eternal Pollyanna. I really do believe that we can make good things happen, if we try hard enough.

So here's the favor I need from all y'all.

Our BBF, Big Shelly, needs everyone's prayers/positive energy/good thoughts/vibes/love/good intentions or whatever you do when a pal or a pal's pal needs help.

Tonight please take  a moment, raise a glass, close your eyes, say a prayer, but whatever you do or however you do it, for that moment think of Big Shelly and wish him well.

I love you all.

what? it's almost the end of FEBRUARY???

I don't know how it happened, but I haven't been blogging as much as I had anticipated this year. A couple of you noticed and left a comment or 2 on my last entry (I know, right? JANUARY 19TH!!) and I will answer all of the comments all y'all were kind enough to leave.

I have lots of reasons why I haven't blogged and also, no reason why I haven't blogged. Maybe it's all the BuzzFeed quizzes on that other social media site I've been sharing taking that have occupied my brain and kept me from writing! Or maybe it's just me.

I haven't given up blogging, sugarpies, I'm just a little slow right now.

So for now, be well, stay dry, stay warm and stay safe wherever you are!

I've been thinking about this ...

(This is the part where I just tell you stuff for no other reason than I need to get it out of my head.)

The other day I had to make a quick withdrawal from the bank, so I used the outside atm because it looked as if was really, really busy inside. That little job done, jumped back in the car, pulled out of the lot and waited behind 4 or 5 cars to make my left turn and go on to the rest of my errands. I could see a man and a woman with a small child in a stroller at the end of the lane standing on the median. He had a neatly lettered cardboard sign...

I'VE JUST LOST MY JOB
CAN YOU HELP US PLEASE

All the drivers in front of me seem to ignore the family at the stop, but the man kept his head high and his sign straight.  Although the sun was shining that morning, it was still cold and windy. His wife had positioned the stroller so that that child was protected by the back of the stroller and the man. She looked embarrassed that they were there.

The cynic in me had been thinking what a con job they had going! Then I saw his face. He was clean shaven and clear eyed. The first thing that impressed me was the sadness in his eyes. I had to motion for him to come to my car and then I had to apologize for having to open my door because my window was stuck. He was surprised by my apology and thanked me for helping him and his family.

All I could think of was what kind of desperation drives a man to stand with his family asking for help from strangers?  What has happened to our society that this sort of desperate act even happens? These are rhetorical questions. I have more and could write more, but to what end?  I no longer know.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tomorrow the MITM is on the road again. Compared to other trips, this one is short! I had planned to put the party pics up, but you know how it goes. We'll try for Tuesday!
BGM is waiting, too!
And so is BBC!
Well, Hello 2014 and Good Bye 2013
Hey!
Bet all y'all thought I fell off the earth or if nothing else, was suffering from THE WORLD'S WORST HANGOVER!
But, nay, nay, I say...
The celebrating here on the Plantation on 31Dec aka New Year's Eve was lovely, delightful, fun and sent us all into the New Year well and happy, but with no hangovers on 01 Jan!  Tired, sleepy, slow moving, for sure, but well.
It did take the MITM and me ages to clean up the next day, but a big breakfast and the Rose Parade from sunny Pasadena, California made the day pass easily into the evening.  It's taken us a few days to sort through the photos, but there are some in relatively decent focus, so those will be forthcoming.  In the days since 01 January we have been really, really, really busy around here! Besides enjoying all my birthday presents,
I GOT A NEW COMPUTER!!!
Yep, I'm doing this entry on a brand spanking new MacBook Pro!!! I'm taking time to sort through all the photos and music on my old Mac which seems massively appropriate in January when we all get a fresh start and we're all full of resolve and ambition...or so I've been told.
Anyway, there it is and here I am and there y'all are! So, on this first post of this grand new year, I say,
CHEERS, my Darlings! Here's to all of us!
today is my birthday!
What better way to start my birthday and also end the year than with Maz? He makes me laugh and I hope all y'all have a little chuckle, too!
Here's to all of you! Much love, much joy, always Peace and a wonderful New Year! I'm honored to share this day with all of YOU!
28 DEC or my birthday is right around the corner!
ha, ha!
that's right, i had to say it, but that's not what this post is about.
for the nine millionth time i just read about that other social media site being the death of blogging. for me, it's sheer laziness on my part that i'm not blogging more. i think of things to blog about or tell the MITM about something i want to write about and then. . .
POOF
it's gone and i've not written a word!
i love reading everyone blogs even thought sometimes i don't comment. but that's on me, not any of you! (here's the deal, sometimes after reading what y'all have written, i feel such the complete idiot i'm hesitant to comment!)  but again, that's my hang-up.
so, where does that leave me?
here's my answer:
i shall continue to write about things that interest me and hope y'all will continue to read.  every time i stray away from blogging i realize how much i miss the interaction with all y'all. the comments make me smile, always make me think, and always remind me that none of us are alone in our doubts/joys/secrets - we are a community of people who've found each other!  i am grateful and humbled and absolutely delighted to count all y'all as friends!
no challenges, no resolutions, just a reminder to myself that i really do like blogging and it really is still a lot of fun!
and then, there are the baby pictures...
BBC posing for the camera
i'll be back soon!
The Case of the 25 Year Old Promise. Guest blog by Thomas M. Hewlett
“Mom, I’m going to be a writer someday.”  I was only fourteen and I’d made pronouncements like this before about being a police officer and, most notably, becoming a waiter.  So my mom smiled at me indulgently and said, “Fine, but you have to write me a mystery one day.”
Fast forward twenty-four years and I’ve done it.
“One Death at a Time” is my first novel, a detective story told in the classic first-person voice of the private eye who’s seen it all.  It tells the story of Jack Strayhorn, an ex-L.A.P.D. detective who was killed in 1948 chasing a suspect in the Black Dahlia murder.  He was reborn a vampire and uses his powers to solve the crimes that the human police force can’t.  In this first book of the Twelve Stakes series, Jack is on the trail of a supernatural hitman who took out a city councilman and an innocent girl.  When the councilman turns out to be the eldest son of a powerful Faerie clan, Jack is drawn into an underground supernatural war.
This is probably not what my mom had in mind when she asked for a mystery.  When I was growing up, her shelves were crammed with the likes of Agatha Christie, Mickey Spillaine, and the Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.  I loved science fiction and fantasy like Isaac Asimov and Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings”, but I was a voracious reader and fell in love with those detective stories early on.  I loved the eccentric characters, the dramatic reveals, and the frantic chases through foggy midnight streets.  Holmes still tops my list of all-time favorite fictional characters.
Of course, Holmes and I have something in common.  He was an addict just like I am.  My experiences with drug and alcohol addiction inspired my novel as much as pipe smoking detectives and blood drinking vampires.
I started drinking and using drugs in high school, picked up speed in college, and crashed and burned in my early thirties.  I finally hit bottom three years ago. I ended up in the psych ward for two weeks followed by a month in rehab.  I lived in sober living for the next nine months, trying to get my life and marriage back together.  During that time, a good friend of mine urged me to start writing about everything I’d been through.  “But make it supernatural,” he said. “Like vampires in A.A.!”  The idea was infectious.  A vampire alcoholic.  Alcoholics Anonymous as a secret cover for vampires trying to help each other survive their disease.  The addict as monster and the monster as hero.  One day at a time, one death at a time.  The Twelve Stakes series was born.
My books are a strange alchemy of murder mysteries, fantasy stories, growing up in Los Angeles, and addiction and recovery.  But it wouldn’t have been possible without my mom’s early influence on my imagination.  I learned from those old books that even though the heroes aren’t always the good guys, it’s their darkness that makes their stories impossible to put down.  Like my characters, they are forced to turn their curses into gifts in order to survive the shadowy worlds they inhabit.
Writing Jack’s story helped me rewrite my own story.  I stayed sober, got my life back on track, and fulfilled a lifelong dream and a long held promise.  I wrote my book.  And I wrote my mom a mystery.
a proper post
i left a comment the other day on brother exile's page and his gentle nagging reminder set me to thinking about my lack of blogging! after being gone for almost 2 weeks, the idea of sitting down and writing about the trip got lost in the reality of coming home and resetting our body clocks. the MITM had been gone even longer because he and part of the coconut krewe had gone pheasant hunting in one of those cold states almost on the pacific, but not in the middle of the country. (how's that for vague?) anyway, he did that for a week and then we met in lalaland for a couple of days with the rest of the krewe for a very big dinner! captain chaos and the MITM were in charge of the main meal and The Kid made dessert BECAUSE not only were we celebrating the hunt, but also the captain's 42nd birthday! (i KNOW, he's getting so old, right?)  somewhere we have pictures, but it seems that we're doing a lot more being present in the moment when we're together and not always taking pictures. (maybe, we're all getting old) or maybe, my mind's camera/eye is storing the images for me to retrieve when i'm alone and phoneless. i don't know, but i'll check the BIG camera's card and see what's there later and post what i find.
after we left SoCal*, we flew up to NoCal** to meet Big Shelly and MissK for a few days in The City*** before driving up to the wine country.  we've made this journey with our BFF's before, but always late in october and never for as long as this trip, so we had a few different experiences. one being that since we were  in The City we had a chance to celebrate Big Shelly's birthday at
Balboa Cafe (yes, yet another of our favorite places to eat and drink) because everything served there is just so damn delicious and wonderful and special, it was the perfect place to be again!
the next night was at Scoma's! check out the menus and you'll see why we love both of these places.  good food, good wine, a gorgeous city and best of all, our friends.
who could ask for anything more?
i think we've talked about our adventures in napa/sonoma and staying in healdsburg and if i haven't, i think i'll just list a few links and let all y'all peruse them at your leisure.
sinskey
unti
reynolds
imagery
benziger
twomey
cosentino
plumpjack
now, i KNOW that seems like a LOT, but we were there for a good length of time and didn't see all of them in one day, darlings! there were a few other places, but if you're going to visit napa/sonoma, it's always fun to discover new places on your own, so i won't spoil it for you by giving away all of our secrets...
if you ever have a chance to visit a wine producing area, do it. there is something about this sort of agriculture that far transcends the glory of the fruit. for me, it's the motivation of the families that run the vineyards and their determination to grow the best fruit possible and make their wines as perfect as possible. many of the vineyards we visited are producing bio-dynamic wines with the move towards sustainable and organically grown grapes without the use of pesticides is paramount.  (for more info about bio-dynamic farming check out: https://www.biodynamics.com)  there is a difference, i can assure you! especially the day after!  for this city girl, being in an area that celebrates the dirt, the fruit and veggies, the animals, the bees and the flowers, it was beyond an experience, it was a reminder that there is a real satisfaction in pulling a baby carrot out of the ground and knowing that it will be on your plate later.  we had the farm to table tasting at sinskey and it was HOT.DAMN.GOOD.
Big Shelly and MissK flew back to SAV and the MITM and i flew down to lalaland for one more overnight with the coconut krewe before flying home and it was a blast! BGM is walking and her big boy cousin, BBC, is leading the way to mayhem and true to his name, chaos! (i love it)
you know what's next...
(Guest Post) Every Writer Needs a Muse: Mine Was Viva
Khanh Ho is writing the first Vietnamese American Detective Fiction ever.  Why?  Because being the first is a power trip.  Follow him on twitter @LAMysteryWriter or visit his website at www.losangelesmystery.com
Viva used to come over and get naked.  She was our next door neighbor, a roley-poley girl.  I didn’t find her attractive--I was too young--but she would cut up apples in wedges and put salt on them.  Then, she would serve them up to me on a porcelain plate.  They were pretty good.  So, I would let her come over and get naked.
Viva was my introduction to fiction; with Viva, I became a real honest-to-goodness writer.  She was game for anything.  So I let her become my muse.
We would play in my unfinished garage, among the stacks of undelivered Reader’s Digests.  Stacks and Stacks.  My brother was addicted to working—he had three different newspaper routes and was always looking for extra cash.  So he picked up this Reader’s Digest Route.  But the stacks kept growing.
They kept growing.
And growing.
I don’t think he ever delivered them.  They became a forest—like the trees in Where the Wild Things Are…or some installation at a fancy museum.
Viva was always trying to escape her house.  She was a child of divorce.  Her father was a drummer.  They didn’t own; they rented.  There were always wine bottles at her house, which smelled like cats and cigarette smoke.  I know:  that year, my teacher kept on asking us to bring empty wine bottles to school for craft projects.  But my family didn’t drink.  So I would come over to Viva’s house and get her father's empties.
There were always empties.
“Do you know what Viva means?”  her father asked.  He was really cool-looking for an old man:  bearded and lanky in that seventies polyester-shirt way.  “It means life in Mexican.”
Viva came over and we played soap opera.  She would take off her clothes and then I would pretend I was shocked to catch her in a compromising position with a stranger—a dark, handsome stranger--and then I would accuse her of infidelity.  I would point my finger at her--lightning in my eyes.
The scenario was always the same—her lounging in an imaginary bath tub.  Me:  angry as all heck, busting in.  She:  begging forgiveness.  I was a regular playwright.
Once, my brother came in and caught us.  It was my fault:  I had forgotten to lock the door.  He was really stern.  “If you want to get naked, you should do it in your own house.”  Viva hid behind the towers of Reader’s Digests, and made the pile of magazines tremble in terrible shame.
Then, Viva moved away.  And there were no more apples with salt.  Sometimes, I will eat apple wedges with salt and think of Viva—my first muse.  I’m eating apple wedges right now and guess what I'm thinking.  I'm thinking that Viva means life.
is it tuesday already?
why, yes, it is, gracie, and you've been MIA!
no excuse, no reason, just . . .
dunno
but, last night the new orleans saints beat the miami dolphins 38-17!  i watched the game and cheered as if i were at the super dome surrounded by the Who Dat Nation! it seemed the only antidote to the fiasco going on in our nation's capital. (end of sports AND politics here today)
the MITM is still on the med side of deepestdarkestafrica, so no news from him directly, but The Doc who IS in deepestdarkestafrica has spoken with him and it's all good.
the coconut krewe is fine and that has to be the best news today!
total aside, but thanks to a certain store that shall remain anonymous HomeGoods and their continuous background music, THIN LIZZY and specifically, Phil Lynott, played a huge part in my one of my dreams! (ok, it wasn't THAT sort of dream!) in my dream, he was standing on my porch with his dog and we were talking about how difficult it was for him to keep them on leash (right, wtf is THAT about) if that isn't strange enough the house was a sort of mashup of two homes i've lived in and absolutely loved. the other funny bit? super nana was in my dream and she kept asking who is that guy? does he live around here?  here's what started it:
