so the other day i was going on and on about something and all y'all were so kind to help me out with some great suggestions about what to do while i was waiting or riding in my car (see, i knew it would come back to me, but i digress...) instead of just answering in comments, i thought, "hey, cool, this is a blog post if i ever saw one..." (yes, i talk to myself just like that!) so here we go...
I like to listen to poetry as I drive, a new CD of Ted Hughes reading his own work has been recently put out by the British Library and I'd love to get my hands on that! I find poetry makes more sense when I hear the poet read it.
I like to sing along to music too though, and alone in my car is the only time I can really do that.
January 29, 2009 5:38:00 PM EST
for some reason, when i hear poetry i close my eyes to listen, so tht probably isn't a good idea whilst driving, BUT, i agree with you about hearing the author read his or her work. hearing the cadence of the author brings a better understanding, to my mind, of the intent of the words. (i'm not surprised you sing along, too, sugar!) xoxo
Audiobooks are THE BEST invention Savannah! Except if you rely on them too much, you end up not being able to load the dishwasher without something to listen to. Trust me, I'm there now. Baha
Get a couple from the library and see what you think. :D I'm currently listening to Twilight because I wanted to know what all the youngsters were raving about. It DID get me through the icy patches on the road on my way home from OKC the other day. Whew!
January 29, 2009 5:48:00 PM EST
i'll give them a try, shan! but only in the car. the library is a grand idea, if i don't like it, i'm not out any cash! i read about your travels! i was tense just READING!! glad you made it home safely. xoxo
Vintage detective stories work for me. Also, if you can find them, old radio series such as The Shadow and The Saint (Vincent Price as the Saint!), which I enjoy as much for the adverts as the story.
January 29, 2009 6:15:00 PM EST
i love detective stories, old & new and i love the shadow and the saintradioprograms. i'll look for them at the library! xoxo
I see you've taken up my suggestion "le sigh" to study French so you won't need a Learn to Speak French audiobook.
How about something a little more esoteric?
Finnish?
FRANCONIAN?
January 29, 2009 9:56:00 PM EST
i need to have mago do some language tapes for me, sugar! i'm sure he'd be a divine teacher! xoxo

You sing off key? Impossible. I have you pegged as pretty much perfect. (I did say "pretty much.) Even you are allowed a slight flaw or two. But no more that that. lol You are liked.
January 29, 2009 10:05:00 PM EST
too many flaws to mention, sugar...singing is the least of them! just ask my family, they'll tell everything! xoxox
Franconian is not esoteric, maybe for non-franconians, it varies from village to village, what is a deep respected sound of affection in one Weiler may be seen as deadly insult in one mile distance, even me and myself have difficulties understanding the good people in the woods. Singing along to good jolly tunes is not uncommon here. I never listend to audio-books but could think of some interesting like "MJ - the early years" performed by Mrs. Middler; Claire Goll: "Ich vergebe keinem" performed by MJ; Rhett Butler: "My side"; Dr. Gonzo: "How the man took it all away"; "Franconian world domination" by mago, but that's a script ...
January 30, 2009 12:34:00 AM EST
i think you should be my language instructor, sugar! mistress mj can't have y'all to herself all the time! xoxo
I'm sure I saw somewhere a gadget thingy you can plug into the cigarette lighter in your car which will power your laptop. If you have one of those roam anywhere devices for accessing the Internet, you could blog while you wait
January 30, 2009 4:31:00 AM EST
i did do some work one day in my car, but damn that was difficult! i'd rather NOT lug my laptop around looking for a coffee shop with wifi, darlin. xoxo (last time i looked into those roaming things, it was expensive and not mac friendly!)
My problem with audio tapes is I fall asleep. Why not try them at bed-time? Hope Miss Daisy is behavin'.
January 30, 2009 5:24:00 AM EST
you might be on to something, sugar! i'll have to give that a try, certainly easier than leaving the tv on... xoxo (she's fine except for the damn off key humming...)
Without any background music. I usually make up the most outlandish lyrics to whatever tune comes to my head (old bitter balls would be proud) at that moment. I keep it going till I get a verse I judge as clever. Really I guess they’re rubbish, but it passes the time no end, and keeps the mind flexed. Who needs TV when you’ve got T-Rex?
January 30, 2009 8:45:00 AM EST
i can just picture y'all singing along and enjoying the grandness of it all! xoxo
below are the jedi commandments that are to be followed by all star wars fans effective immediately (these commandments were done by george lucas and supershadow collectively)
1. thou shalt not question the infallibility of george lucas or his creations
explaination: lucas can only make things that are total in their perfection. if a star wars film fails at the box office , it is not a failing of lucas. REMEMBER: George lucas cannot make mistakes!!! It is the fault of you the fans by not going to the cinema enough.
2. thou shalt spend at least 20 per cent of income per month on star wars merchandise
explaination: a true star wars fan will always ensure the star wars story is continually sold. We must ensure that our money gets to lucasfilm. We owe it to george lucas. he has only you (the star wars fan)'s interest at heart. remember when passing a toy shop,do go in and buy star wars merchandise(figureens, star wars books etc). do not think of the money , only that you honour lucas with each purchase.
3. thou shalt always ensure to the best of my ability that all new star wars releases are box office smash hits
Explaination: a true star wars fan will go to any new star wars film in the cinema at least 30 times!!!. It is imperative that you take time off work, start at the 3:30 showing and then all the repeat showings until the cinema closes. If all star wars fans obeyed this commandment all future star wars films would knock titanic off the top pedestal If you are unable to get time off work, simply calculate the cost of going 30 times and send this amount to supershadow.com
4. do shalt within my lifetime visit lucasfilm (skywalker ranch) at least once.
Explaination: true star wars fans are obliged to visit sky walker ranch which is the birth place of jedi when there, please do all the guided tours (their is a discount if all taken together) however if a star wars fan is coming close to the end of his/her life and has not yet made the pilgrimage, he/she must leave at least 20 per cent of they're estate at death to george lucas and lucas film. lucas will remember that person as if they had made the pilgrimage
5. Thou shalt not suffer anyone to ridicule star wars or george lucas
Explaination: a true star wars fan will not suffer the star wars story, movies , characters, special effects to be ridiculed by the foolish. ie should a friend or family member ridicule jar jar binks, you must disown that person even though they may be your flesh and blood. lucas expects nothing less. dont not use violence-just walk away. the jedi religion is a religion of peace.
January 30, 2009 2:48:00 PM EST
ok, this is just so damn random, i'm gonna leave it here! i thought i was special, but then i found out that supershadow is using numerous other handles and posting all over the place!
History - I'm listening to 'Guns of August' (amazing - oh the vanity of humanity, of the irrationalism of nationalism) when I'm in the gym (not s often as I should) lately...
January 31, 2009 4:42:00 AM EST
i like reading history, sugar! but, i'll check it out at the library! xoxox
so, there it is, all y'all get to read everyones suggestions and my responses. i'll do my super bowl XLIII post on monday!

January 29, 2009 6:22:00 PM EST
i'm too chicken to do that on city streets, sugar! xoxo
In the movie 'Driving Miss Daisy', the character pretended she had class and dignity. You have it for real, doll. A real classy sassy mamma.
January 29, 2009 6:35:00 PM EST

How about a David Sedaris audio book - he reads them himself and you'll laugh your socks off!
January 30, 2009 10:06:00 AM EST
i was never a fan of his and then, i saw an interview he did! he might have to be one of my choices! (his sister, amy, is an absolute hoot!) xoxo
