random bits for thursday
~~~~~
i am working on a piece about connections/consequences/truth/and whatever i can toss in there. so, today is really going to be random...i'm not sure when or even if the piece will see the light of day or pixels, but it is rollin around my brain...
which in some bizarre way lead me to another thought about words..written or in this case typed words..nothing original, so i'll not be offended if you wander away now....but i digress, the flatness without nuance of voice or body movement...it's all part of a reaction to a post over at indy's about some new techno dating service/device all of which mystifies me...as in when did people stop really talking TO each other...why do people put barriers between themselves and others? some sort of protection against feeling? or am i just totally out of touch with the world as it is now? (i have been married a long time..and to the same guy ~wink~)
~~~it's going to be a long day...
todays last addition:
if you haven't read waiter rant today's entry is a grand start...a kind of closure to my incomplete conversation about how we speak/deal/interact/are with each other....it's really true we receive back what we put out into the world...sometimes, you just have to trust, take the leap of faith and ...

Memorial Day 2007
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall see this day and live old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispin's:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day.
Then shall our names,
Familiar in their mouths as household words,
Harry the king,
Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot,
Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
William Shakespeare (1599) in Henry V, Act 4, Scene 3

a couple of good reads
another would be mr. urban etiquette a great essay on religion in politics and always a great read!
and so it goes...
the city of savannah was founded in 1733 by british general james oglethorpe and was the first planned community...an urban planer's dream to this day. well, like other american cities with the advent of the suburbs and shopping malls and other forms of urban sprawl, the downtown commercial area slipped into neglect, as did the surrounding residential area. now, jump forward into the present, savannah is a thriving small metropolitan city (i won't bore you with stats, etc) that is faced with making decisions that could affect it as adversely as the flight from city centers in the '60s did...how to hold fast to oglethorpe's dream of a city that served its citizens by providing a safe, sustainable and pleasant enviornment. which brings me to what i was doing yesterday (and have been doing for a few years here...) working on the downtown master plan for savannah..how do we manage growth, both now and in the future. this city is the largest federally designated historic landmark district in the country and yet, is still a thriving 21st century community. it may look like disneyland at times with the flickering gaslights and spanish moss, but it a city struggling to do what's right for its citzens now and in the future.
so what does all this mean? nothing to most of you unless you're an urban planner OR you're living in a city that is trying to maintain some sort of balance in its development while trying to preserve the relics of its past. as a community, we've struggled over the past few years to come together and achieve some sort of consensus about commercial developement, residential (both homeownership and rental), transportation, and quality of life issues. so, this is what i've been doing, being an active member of my community, being one of the voices for consensus, acting as comic relief in stressful situations, but most of all and most importantly for me, helping to safeguard this little piece of heaven here on earth.
and yes, i have a job, i'm not just a diletante or a lady who lunches! ~wink~
*bless your heart*
addendum: hope i'm not coming across as some do-gooder twat (i do so love the slang i'm pickin up), just thought i'd share my day...

when the planets align or things that make you say...
anyway,
so why do this? i've always kept some sort of "dead tree blog" (thanks again for that phrase, indy) over the years, but never with daily entries, more an anecdotal file of thoughts, drawings, poems...a kind of catch-all for impressions, ideas, slips of paper which, by the by, is why a notebook with a band around it (moleskin has become my favorite thanks to mr. moose) is ideal, but, my journals were only for me! shortly after i started this blog there was some conversation about do i continue? was it far too public? was it enough to change names or not name when relating events...could i hide in plain sight? well, yeah, there was a tiny bit of concern and funny thing, all of this was discussed early on when i started blogging, but i digress...so, back to the why...i'm not a writer, i have no aspirations to a literary career, i write because i need the outlet, i enjoy the interaction with those who drop in and comment, there is the sheer joy of finding people who "know what you're talking about" ... blogging has been like meeting one person and getting invited to a party at their home and slowly getting to know other people...making connections, finding those common interests, the exchange of information...the simple humanity of it all.
when i've sat here and written about events in my life that were difficult, i took solace in your words of comfort and support, i let all of you in, as you did me and i am richer for it. this community of friends stretches around the world and continues to grow with every comment, so when i look at the sitemeter and see new places appearing, it is rather exciting, ok, it doesn't take much anymore ;) ... but i do have to admit...seeing a post from doj.gov (department of justice) was a BIT disconserting...but that, too, is another story...where was i...shiny objects...
anyway, there is no summation to this meandering because it is an ongoing process...it is what it is..my ramblings, my thoughts..my anecdotal file....
to be continued

it could happen...
You are The Devil
Materiality. Material Force. Material temptation; sometimes obsession
The Devil is often a great card for business success; hard work and ambition.
Perhaps the most misunderstood of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. This is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remember that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.
What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

and the answers are....
tony....best dream? that's a tough one...there's the one about the round the world cruise on a private yacht with...wait, i can't tell you that one...guess i'm not going to hear yours either, sugar ;) but it was my best dream!
rhi...(you already know me too well!) seriously, there isn't ONE best moment..that have been many...it's like the guinness commercial..question: which is the best pint you ever had? answer: the one in front of me! most recently would be finding out that mr savannah didn't need to have a splenectomy and his jaw didn't need to be wired...those were damn fine moments!
istavanski... a colonder is the person responsible for inserting the colon on marquees. it can also be used to designate the person responsible for performing a colonoscopy.
ellie...#1 i started blogging because i was always commenting on 2 blogs and it dawned on me that i was having fun and should start my own
#2 i've gained all of you! seriously, getting to know all of you has been a grand experience and one that i hope to continue
#3 no negatives so far. *knock on wood*
rock mum...no idea, sugar, but i will keep you posted! and bring tee shirts :)
queen of dysfunction....(you crack ME up!) i am indeed in savannah! we love it here, so of course, i'd reccommend relocating! as to being hounded out of town...hell, sugar, i'm still here ..this is a very tolerant place, but like any small town, you have to look at what you need and want for you and your family. my pic was taken out in los angeles...we were in the parking structure at the Grove mall...i was wearing a multi-colored thin cotton scarf.
and guess what..today the sitemeter reached 1000 posts (since march when i installed it) kinda cool and thank you, istavanski..you were the #1000...no prize, just thanks!
and today...
*because it's still all about me*
