feeling it...

out of the loop
out of touch
old

or
maybe...

ahead of the game
glad to be alive
and enjoying it, too!

i think i'll go with the latter, it's all closer to the truth. besides, everyone will get to their own "spot of contentment" eventually... and sometimes, maybe all the time...it's ok to just revel in the now.

tangents...

killing time while i wait for an appointment...

reading one of my favorite blogs and stumbled on a new poster...followed the link to his site...and then another...absolutely fascinating...i know people have written about this experience before, but it never ceases to amaze me how: 1. interconnected we are 2. how delightful it is to find a new writer 3. how this always reminds me of book reviews or spending time at the local bookstore...

*nothing original here, i know...i'm WAITING and amusing myself*

hump day/wednesday

an op-ed piece to share...

I have no idea how ya'll link things so neatly, so I just copied this article from the International Herald Tribune...seemed appropriate...

Meanwhile: I am, therefore I doubt
John Patrick Shanley

There are two predominant ways of dealing here in the United States. There is the culture of doubt, and there is the culture of dogma. Both are remedies to the problem of choice.

It is indicative that one of the most incendiary and divisive issues of the last many years swirls around the word choice. Should a woman have the right to choose? Are you pro-life or pro-choice? How would you respond?

The majority of Americans have already been asked many times if they are pro-life or pro-choice and they already have your answer. Most people know that pro-life is code for one thing, and pro-choice is code for its opposite.

When they are asked if they are pro- life or pro-choice, they are being asked to declare themselves politically. It is a political question that defines reality as an either/or proposition. And it's a bit of a trick. My impression is that people still answer when asked, but they've grown weary of the question; it's inhuman. We know instinctively there's more to life.

Religion is often the arbiter in these matters. We look to our church, temple, or mosque for a moral ruling.

I remember at my church school in the Bronx a priest described a dilemma to my eighth-grade class. "Your wife and your mother are both drowning and you can save only one. Which one do you save?" Most of us answered that we would save our moms.

The priest said: "Wrong! Once you are married, your primary responsibility is to your wife. You should save your wife."

I remember picturing the dark waters closing over my mother's head as I held a shivering indistinct female.

Then I went to a Catholic high school. In one of my textbooks, it had a section on logic. In this section, there was a list of fallacies. One leapt out at me. It was called the Limited Choice Fallacy. An orator or teacher or politician or priest offers you a choice, but the choice is in itself misleading. My mind flew back to my drowning wife and mother. I had been played! I had been a victim of the Limited Choice Fallacy.

Another question out there, more immediate at the moment, is Iraq. "Should we stay in Iraq or should we get out?"

It's an irritating question because again it is not human. It appears to be direct and clear, but it leaps over everything important that needs to be discussed and understood. It's dogma framed as choice. So I have a suggestion. Don't fall for it.

Responsible, thinking people do not lead a yes-or-no existence. Responsible, thinking people do not have to reduce complicated subjects down to "for" or "against."

How did the church scandals happen? How could they have been so extensive? Why were the victims treated as culprits, and the culprits protected? Well, people made up their minds. They made a choice. People decided who to trust and what to believe. And anything they saw or heard that did not conform to those choices, those facts simply were not allowed to exist.

There is a tendency in our time and perhaps throughout time to simplify. We all want it simple. We want to know what to do. A great communicator is one who can break it down for you — "Just give me the bottom line." "Cut to the chase."

Well, life and morality and governance, adequate citizenship, are not about "the chase." Just as having a spiritual life is not about making up your mind once and for all. True spirituality is present, it's alive and observant.

Doubt is not paralysis. Certainty is. Doubt keeps the doors and windows open. Belief is one room with no way out. Do not let others impose a polarity of response on you. You need not live a reactive life. Don't look to have life explained to you, presented to you. Live the life that emanates from your interior greatness. Be an overwhelming bounty of impressions, ideas, conflicting theories, and let the propellant behind all this be generosity. A giving.

Never look to the opposite side to change. It is always your turn to change. Society begins and ends with each of us. If you want to reverse some frustrating polarization of thought you encounter in others, I invite you to passionately doubt everything you believe.

friday wrap-up ....

10am..when is this day going to end?

the amount of coverage over the death of one woman who is famous for being famous is unnerving. what about the deaths that are occurring AT THIS VERY MOMENT due to war, disease, poverty....why the focus on one while we ignore the millions?

i need a break...

tis to laugh...

just read another blog, left a post and realised...

I HAVE TRIP ANXIETY!

yes, that consummate traveler, that glorious gadabout, yes, your one and only savannah....is *petrified* that she will indeed have to board a plane AGAIN ...it seems as if everything is saying don't go, stay home, find another way, do it another time...JUST NOT NOW. this is not me, i have a really good attitude about traveling, i love it..i can sleep on a plane, in an airport, we all ready know i sleep in cabs - flying, driving, trains...ok, not buses or boats (long story for another time) BUT anyway....i keep asking myself: WHY? followed by, when did i turn into such a superstious old crone??? and the other thing, what's up with this idea of signs??? wtf does that mean? i'm turning into a bad movie *ACK*

the floor is open for suggestions....

11:12PM/23:13....YIKES! ok....i am sooooo changing the colors!

midweek madness

things seem to spike on wednesday, as if instead of being that midpoint where nothing happens, life seems to hop/skip/jump around..no rhyme or reason (great trite saying, but really true) to anything..in my world anyway. i was supposed to leave soon, but the schedule has become fluid. ok, i can deal with that, i'm not buying the ticket BUT it does make it ever so slightly difficult to rsvp for meetings, social gatherings, etc. not that i'm whining, but hell, this has become a fantastic place to just ramble on until the desire to scream, throw things, punch someones lights out subsides...

but back to my spike theory...

or not.

it's magic

connections/reconnections...

conversations started/finished, as if no time had lapsed in between...the strength and loveliness of friendship.

my blue funk has vanished.

what a difference a day makes

btw, movie and singer?

9:30PM...

is there some cosmic level out there? one friendship rekindles as another dies?

Monday, February 5, 2007

insert witty title here

that blue funk i wrote about the other day? well, it's still out there...

sometimes, no matter what goodness/positivity you send out...only malevolence/negativity return to haunt you.

where is scarlett when i need her?

oh well

the colts took the game 29 - 17 i really wanted the bears to win...

actually, i REALLY wanted the saints to win...go to the super bowl and walk away with the trophy...but since that didn't happen...da bears had my support...

sidebar...

falling out of favor....

what happens when you're no longer the "new new thing" ... watching someone go into a free fall now and wondering why she cares... nothing i say seems to matter which makes me wonder what to do ... social aspirations, genteel society...what century are we living in?

what was the song? different strokes for different folks...

i think i'm going to turn my phone off...

part II

so, it seems that most of the people i know are still suffering from this debilitating, gut wrenching, lung collasping, hacking cough, lose your ability to concentrate on more than one thing cold...a series of calls made and received confirmed that none of our crew is having/attending any social gatherings today. which is fine with me because i made no plans, i have my newspapers, some new books to start and one to finish....if i can remember where i left it...

mr savannah is concerned about my well being (bless his heart) but he is a gazillion miles away, so while i appreciate the sentiment, i'm still making my own soup and whining about it..and feeling miserable...whatever that blue funk was that infected the universe the other day ( ya'll know who you are) it is still lingering and seems to be living in my house today...

*wait for it*

sunday in savannah...

today is superbowl MMMMCMXCIX

i will probably make breakfast soon, read the local paper...make a quick run to the market...pick up the NYT...and park myself in front of the big screen. question is will i be watching the game...

to be cont.

something's happening here...

...what it is, i ain't exactly sure...

perfect song for today...there is some sort of undercurrent, some disturbance that i can't define, grasp, explain...pick a word...it's as if every person i know is "vexed" today...as if today, we all realised it isn't going to get any better, in fact, it will probably get worse AND...

there isn't one thing we can do to change it!

and i'm still dealing with this cold/bug that's keeping me drugged and borderline paranoid....and hungry!

but i digress...

another blogger wrote a piece that startled me...the despair about his situation, as i read it, was PALPABLE! i hope it was a momentary thing... a lose of *faith* the lateness of the hour...we've all been there... but today, i've heard the same feeling expressed, different situations, of course, but still the same despondency, hopelessness and melancholy, hence my questioning why...

are we all suffering from the same malaise? the same sense of wretchedness? overwhelmed by misery?

or is it just too much bad news?
