wow, has it really been almost a week?
i guess so.
here's a picture of kurt elling i took at birdland over 4 years ago (i can't believe it's been that long *sigh*) anyway, he's a favorite of mine and birdland was one of the best places to see him perform!
i'm sort of at lost for words right now and sort of liking the idea of sharing some of my favorite music with everyone.
words will return eventually.
stories will be shared again.
things that happen around me will be blog fodder soon.
but right now, listen to betty carter singing tight. she was more than incredible, she was ground zero for young musicians learning their craft. kurt paid tribute to her and her musicians when he sang tight.

the backstory of the two jakes is oil
being back in california is always a mixed bag for me. my history is rooted there and all my children are there. (i feel as if i'm doing a voice over for a film noir already.) the coastline between san francisco and los angeles is littered with stories of incredible success and abysmal failure. multi-million dollar homes built on the edge of the world routinely slide into the ocean, only to be rebuilt a few yards in similarly unstable land. earthquakes, fires, torrential rains can make life exciting, unpredictable and yet, when you've lived there, grown up there and finally walked away, it's just part of being a native. all of it is part of your dna because you live on the faultline.
but back to the two jakes. it was always supposed to be part 2 in a california trilogy; water (chinatown), oil (the two jakes) and the final installment, real estate. but, why this bit of film history? the oil platform in the background of the wedding picture, that's why. a bit of oil drilling history in the comments, so to speak. i grew up with oil rigs as part of the scenery in los angeles. they weren't located in just one part of the city, they were everywhere! now, in some parts of the city they were artfully hidden (check out the history of beverly hills), but on the way to LAX, along the hills you'll see the grasshopper shapes still...(i had a conversation with super nana about driving in la, i'm massively lost when i'm not behind the wheel!) so, i can see where i am, i just can't tell you where i am as we take this drive.
where was i?
oh yeah, movies and la.
it's crazy, it's mad, it's la! i'd guess that most of what people know about la is from movies and television. from sunset boulevard to bladerunner and everything in between, la story is as true as manhattan. some people really do drive from one block to the next, just as every woman in nyc wears jimmy choos daily. there is some truth in every story, but, in la...it's all really true!
i've found my home here in the south because of the west coast. the hospitality, the ocean and the storytelling made it a natural fit for me! now, if i could only get a trader joe's in savannah, i'd be really happy!

47
there are pictures.
somewhere.
i just have to figure out which ones i can post. the wedding was lovely. the sun decided to shine and the wind wasn't too brisk. the speeches were short, the toasts apropos and everyone appeared to enjoy the festivities. pomona college did, once again, represent. family and friends made the trek up the coast and everyone missed the MITM.
captain chaos is happy and celebrating with The Girl in hawaii, so what else can we say, except, congratulations, best wishes and good luck!
and yes, there was a bit of drama, so that makes it officially a wedding!

a wedding day poem
I Am Not Yours
by Sara Teasdale
I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.
You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.
Oh plunge me deep in love—put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.
with thanks to poets.org for my daily poetry fix!
now, if you can, y'all need to drop by mago's place for a perfect sunday music fix!
i'm off to the wedding on the beach in carpinteria!

i'm going away
i'm leaving today for the west coast.
it's a good thing because captain chaos is getting married to The Girl on sunday!
i'll be staying with super nana until we make the trek up the coast to wedding site for the weekend. it will be grand to see mr. moose & miss nan (we're going to try and have breakfast at a new spot downtown) and dr. t and the dancing lady again! captain chaos and i are having a mother-son luncheon on friday, so i'll get to spend time with all of the coconut krewe alone and in a big group! the only downside is the MITM can't make it out for the wedding. (i don't want to talk about it. yes, we watched moonstruck again)
the other downer is that today, one of my most favorite bloggers (yeah, that's right, i'm not telling who) is landing in my little town, but i won't be here to buy h** a drink or 20. *sigh* anyway, other days, other times - maybe we'll meet up in NYC one day and kidnap UB and make him pay for drinks!
