day 5 or why this thursday should end quickly

i can't sleep.

i woke at 0200h and gave up even trying to sleep about an hour ago.

i did watch a repeat of the west wing that i don't remember seeing.

i also watched a repeat of cold case that i sort of remember seeing.

i know that this not sleeping is happening far too often.

i am already thinking about tonight.

day 4 and today is about serious business

On my sidebar, you'll see a link to the Southern Poverty Law Center. I'm asking that you read the entry from the Director of the SPLC about Lou Dobbs. Director Richard Cohen has requested that Mr. Dobbs be removed from CNN. If you are familiar with Dobbs, you'll understand why I am standing with Mr. Cohen. We hold journalists to a standard of integrity that demands honesty and truthfulness. We expect those who deliver the news and commentary to be ethical in methods of research and postulations. Mr. Dobbs does not and has not in the past been an entirely truthful person with regard to either.

I would ask that you read the article and decide for yourself. I know I have.

this sunday is. . .

a good news, bad news type of day.

the bad news is that the MITM is feeling down because he still has a long stretch in deepestdarkestafrica ahead of him.

the good news: that's only in his mind. he really is in the almost home stretch, but it just seems longer. he'll be fine tomorrow.

the other bad news is unexpected company is coming over.

the good news: IT'S OUR FAVORITE COUSIN!!!!! (ok, that really isn't a good news/bad news thing, but hey, i'm writing this.) yep, the cousinwhomakespuppets is coming down from ATL on her way back up north. yeah, she likes to drive! the MITM is really sorry he isn't going to see her, so i'll probably call him when she gets here so they can chat. i like to spread the joy when i can.

now, back to my quick cleanup around here!

Walter Cronkite 1916 - 2009

The voice of TV news for the 20th century has died. For me, Walter Cronkite was the standard by which all journalists were judged. His was a story that was the epitome of the American Dream. He started as a newspaper delivery boy and then went on to make television history. If you read anything about the impact of television in the 60's, you will read about Walter Cronkite.

“and that’s the way it is.”

I will always hear those words, his closing tagline, in his voice.

Rest in peace, Mr. Cronkite.

Thanks guys! As Mama would say "Y'all are just too sweet!"

We ended up at a pretty great Mexican place after all, Rosario's.
We also went to a place on the Riverwalk, as we are lazy and can't go too crazy on the corporate card with budget cuts and all, called Boudro's. Pretty decent Prime Rib, but does not compare to Taylor's in LA.

We spent the rest of the time in a sports bar, because you can smoke in bars here (so nice-even though I felt like I was breaking the law! California and that damn no smoking rule!) and I like baseball. Plus my coworker likes beer, so it all worked out.
Back to LALA land tomorrow, thoroughly unimpressed with Texas.

Oh and what the hell is with the unsweetened tea? Crime against humanity in my book. But y'all know I've spent some time in Georgia. . .

had to bring word verification back, sugarpies! in the space of 5 minutes my inbox was filled with anonymous comments all written in kanji. these comments were posted on various blog entries going back for months. so rather than have to deal with that everyday...

i'll be back later today. i have a newspaper to read and coffee to drink and a bit of sun to soak up before it gets too hot to be outside.

saturday and not in the park

today is a work day for me. the dreaded saturday housekeeping drudgery. i might wander upstairs to our most underutilized room in this house! it's called a bonus room by agents and a very expensive storage room by me! i plan on turning it into my office/secondary guestroom, but that means a ton of work. the upside will be a totally quiet, private space and a perfect writing room or rehearsal space for the MITM. i think right now, i really need the space for me.

i'll take pictures.

1315hrs update:

it's truly worst than i thought, my darlings! it is a finished room, so there's no DIY that has to be done, it's even worse than that! we're talking boxes and boxes and even more boxes of files, tapes, music, instruments, music stands, extra chairs...you know, stuff. now, there is a tv up there already and i have thought about setting that up and slipping a dvd or even a cd in while i work...but to do that...ok, yes, i could just bring my laptop up there.

h'mmmm, wonder if i could make a movie and post it here.

talk about wasting time procrastination....

The obituary of a complex man who came to understand the consequences of his actions and tried to atone. If you've seen "The Fog of War" I think you can see in his face that he knew he was damned anyway.

I've taken the liberty of posting the last paragraph:

Unlike any other secretary of defense, Mr. McNamara struggled in public with the morality of war and the uses of American power.

“What makes us omniscient?” he asked in “The Fog of War,” released at the time of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

“We are the strongest nation in the world today,” he said. “I do not believe that we should ever apply that economic, political, and military power unilaterally. If we had followed that rule in Vietnam, we wouldn’t have been there. None of our allies supported us. Not Japan, not Germany, not Britain or France. If we can’t persuade nations with comparable values of the merit of our cause, we’d better re-examine our reasoning.”

“War is so complex it’s beyond the ability of the human mind to comprehend,” Mr. McNamara concluded. “Our judgment, our understanding, are not adequate. And we kill people unnecessarily.”

who knew this was going to happen on a friday when all federal offices are closed and everyone is already in party mode?

there's something about starting my day in the damndarkmorning knowing that i don't have a proper job and it's already in the upper 70s outside and humid and i know that it's only going to get hotter as the day progresses that tends to make me not only write, but speak in incredibly long sentences because i know if i stop i'll never start again and i'll probably just fall asleep. . .

taking notice

this is my 895th post.

i just happened to notice that on the dashboard. now, most people would have noticed and then, being aware of the proximity to 900 would have done an entry on reaching that milestone. but me? oh no, not the easy or expected for me. a little twist, some novelty, a bit of a tease before the real event, so to speak...
