well, there is and now i can share it!!!

super nana & mr matrix are going to have a BABY!!!!

and no, no one knows if that's a boy or a girl. and that's OK. we all like surprises. OK, not all surprises, but this one is fine. the nursery is already planned, furniture has been secured and will be delivered soon. there are color schemes and a fresco has been planned! people are thinking about baby showers and parties. it's just all so exciting!!

there will be more photos, but for now, super nana said i could share this one with all y'all!

Charlie Callahan has died.

Professor B. Worm passed away on Wednesday, February 2nd. Charlie was one of those people that I didn't have to meet in person to call friend. Over the years it was just accepted fact around the plantation that my pal in Arizona was a very, very cool guy and we were all damn lucky to know him! He wrote kind words of support to my children during  difficult times just because he knew what they were dealing with and knew how a few words of support could make a difference. I will always be thankful for his friendship.

Rest well, dear Friend. I miss you already.

just because or i just clicked on share

long, dull, grey day UNTIL it was time to join our BFF's from one plantation over for a night on the town! sooo, the 3 of us went downtown and over the bridge to the westin hotel for a jazz concert. lots of fun and really great to see a bunch of musicians i hadn't seen in ages! the other part was seeing people who remembered the club and asked when we're were going to do it again! of course, as soon as i got home i sent the MITM a message letting him know that he was still remembered as the best sax player in our little town! his response? wow, cool, but what's the score for the NYG-SF game! (yeah, i turned the game on as soon as i got home and he knew it) i gave him the score and then, turned the tv on, blasted the sound and put my MacBook in front of the screen so he could see and hear the game! good times, good times and big hurray for technology!

if you tried to visit my blog today (after i corrected the html) this is what you saw. i have tried not to politicize my blog because most of the time, the politics would be local and not of interest to anyone except me and my neighbors. today was an exception. today was a day when i felt i NEEDED to express myself and show my support AGAINST a bad piece of legislation that would NOT stop online piracy, but would put my country on the same plane as china and iran in terms of government censorship and interference in the flow of information.  the issue isn't dead yet, but i do hope that copyright laws will be amended to reflect current technology and look not only to the current technology, but also to its future growth and potential. laws can be vague to allow for growth, but they must not be so vague as to allow for abuse. 

wikipedia has put together an explanation of the legislation and also lists the pros and cons of implementation. form your own opinion based on critical and informed research. don't be swayed by graphics or sound bites. 

a mind is a terrible thing to waste, so use yours!

today it isn't going to take much to intrigue me/distract me/engage ...


what was that? yes, i was saying something and then...

not enough sleep. i'm sorry, where was i? yes, tuesday. tomorrow if all goes as planned i wont be here. or the site won't be here. we'll see.




reading update: 2 done, 2 started and a clarification of the guidelines. if a book that's been in the TBR (to be read) doesn't grab/excite/makeyouturnthepage interesting, then it can be set aside, never to grace your TBR pile again. *whew* i might write about those. i'm reading a mystery set in post world war 1 england which i suppose is my hat tip to all things downton abbey. we'll see. it's been sitting on the nightstand for 2 days now. a test of wills is the title. i have to admit, the storyline and the protagonist are intriguing...


but, really? you know what i've been doing since the saints lost to the 49er's? watching movies/tv shows/imports/documentaries all streaming to my tv. netflix is my pal and we have spent some quality couch time together! *sigh* i already miss football! BUT, next weekend, i'm going to have to watch the NYG-SF divisional NFC championship game BECAUSE i think the NYG are going to kick some serious SF butt. now, i'm guessing many of you don't know or care, but we're almost done, so don't worry. (see nfl.com for explanations)

and having resumed control of the helm...

first, thank you all for the responses to the MITM's entries. the coconut krewe was surprised, to say the least, that he/we were even considering going anywhere else besides the west coast this summer! but, i say, we should do it all! 

i've been reading and not blogging (as if you didn't already know that) but, thought i'd drop in and update you on my progress. i did finish one book and pretty much laughed my way through it, but i love the author and her style and also that it's regional, so i indulge my inner romantic. currently reading Death Comes To Pemberley and loving how well p. d. james is channeling jane austen! i think the next read will be  2 books at once, one to leave by the bed and the other by my chair in the living room. (i KNOW! what a lazy coot i am, right?)  also on my agenda has been watching football! my team, the new orleans saints beat some other team (detroit lions) to take the wild card and will now go out to the west coast and kick some other team's (san francisco 49'ers) butt for the division. the following games will be for the championship and then, THE SUPER BOWL. now i don't want to jinx the outcome, so we'll just leave that topic alone for now...

that's what been happening here on the plantation, sugarpies. what about with all of you? we're working on our second week of the new year...think we'll get it right this year? me? i'm just thinking about today, everything else will fall into its own place at its own speed.

UK ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone who gave Savannah and I your suggestions for visiting and vacationing on your lovely island. We were indeed overwhelmed by the plethora of choices and your many heartfelt suggestions. We have been pouring over all of our options.


Not too long ago I drove a rented truck from Savannah to San Francisco while helping my daughter move. I was accompanied by a good friend of mine who, unfortunately is not one for driving, so I ended up driving 90% of the approx 3,000 miles. We took the southern route because I like it much better than driving through the center of the country. We left early enough so that we could eat lunch in New Orleans. You can't drive through New Orleans. You have to stop and eat - it's a rule dontcha know. We spent the first night in San Antonio, Texas because 1 - my friend had never seen the Alamo, and 2 - I knew a great steak joint on the San Antonio River Walk. We spent the second night in Tuscon, Arizona because we wanted to have real Mexican food and not Tex-Mex. The third night we arrived in San Francisco and feasted on gourmet food and great Napa Cabernets.

You get the picture? Drive, look around a bit, eat and drink. That's it! It's just that simple.


So, considering that the distance from Bath to Edinburgh is approximately 400 miles (considerably less than SAV-SF), and that we are planning to visit your island on a three week stay, we are planning the great Savannah & MITM UK ROAD TRIP 2012! Hooorayyy! We will fly to Heathrow, rent a car, drive around wherever our fancies dictate, stay in small hotels and B&Bs, and see as many of the lovely places you have collectively suggested. That's it! It's just that simple - or is it?

At any rate, plans are underway. I would like to do this, if possible, in June. Savannah has yet to weigh in on the timing - she has, however, said: "UK hell mister! How about that new porch you were going to build?" I plan to ply her with wine and gifts on my return to the states so that she'll warm-up to the idea of driving like Mr. Toad through the English countryside.

LONDON CALLING...........Well, Sort Of






Hello? Do I have your attention?

This is MITM. Savannah is somewhere on the plantation with her head stuck in a book.

What do these photos say to you? Do they say - how interesting? I'd like to visit Africa someday. Do they say - picturesque, honey let's plan a vacation and a safari? Do they say - how did they get all those people in a Toyota truck?

Well I hope that you do visit somewhere on the giant continent of Africa someday. It is well worth it at least once. BUT TO ME, WHO HAS TO BE HERE MORE TIMES THAN I'D LIKE, they say the following -

Languages spoken on a daily basis: Arabic, French, several tribal languages

Health Issues: Every disease known to man, $800 worth of shots to get off the plane, anti-malaria pills daily that cause hallucinations and paranoia, poor diet choices

Socio/Economic Issues: Don't ask, at least while I'm here

I'm hankering for a mother tongue vacation spot this year. I'm thinking Savannah and I will take two to three weeks in the UK. Now, in the past, we've done what every dumb yank has done - stayed in London. So this year I'd like to see Oxford, parts of Scotland - anywhere outside of London. Not that we don't love it mind you, but it's like Brits coming to the states and going only to New York, or God forbid, Florida. What is the fascination with Florida, by the way? If you want to see the south, just ask us, we'll give you some really hip places to go to and you never even have to cross into Florida, even driving!

So we are open for suggestions. We're adventuresome, obviously. We can make do with anything from flop house (no thank you, i draw the line at flophouses. xoxox/savannah) to five star. We eat almost anything and wash it down with whatever we can - preference being a good wine. And we even somewhat speak the language!

So don't hold back - give us your best shot. Or tell us to stay the hell in the states and if we want adventure, go to Canada.

The Eulogy by the MITM for his Mother, read by his Brother on that rainy day in Los Angeles


Henry David Thoreau wrote “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”  Sadly, for many, this remains true and desperation keeps them from fully experiencing life.  This was never the case with Carmel.  The 7th ward could not contain her young spirit.  She had an infectious personality that whirled around South Central Los Angeles like a gossamer dervish.  She howled down Wilshire Boulevard and laughed at any hint of restrictions.  She elegantly whispered through the Spanish moss of stately Savannah oaks.  She was always, and at all times of her life, a woman of substance and someone to be reckoned with.

She could simultaneously madden and entertain us with her impishness and vanity.  According to Carmel, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth, Dorothy Danridge, and even Lena Horne, copied her style.  She could humble us with her deep understanding of all that is beautiful in this life.  She was a lover.  She was loved.  She had the warmth of family and lifelong friends.  She was blessed and privileged in much of her life, and struggled without a husband to maintain a blessed life for her family.  Exceptional is a word that comes to mind when I try to define her life.

Her affable spirit fought to stay ahead of the game as the ravishes of dementia and Alzheimer’s took her slowly from us.  She would sometimes recite her favorite poem, a poem she told me she committed to memory while in high school.  It is by William Ernest Henley.  I think it bears reading because it is so much of what became Carmel’s raison d’être:

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Out of the clear blue she would spout out the numbers of my father’s WWII dog tag, each digit absolutely correct.  I thought it was because she had written so many letters to him when he was posted in Korea that it was burned in her memory.  I asked her, “Mom, why are you remembering Dad’s ID tag number?”   She looked at me with clarity, as if the dementia had left the room, and said, “Because he consumed me.”  I knew I was witness to a love that was continuing and everlasting.

Many of you in this room visited Carmel over the last few years during this insidious illness.  She would say to me, “Pull up a chair for so and so”, or “don’t you hear what so and so is saying?”  She would laugh out loud.  “Mom?  What ya laughing at?”  “So and so just told me the funniest joke.”  Her memories of all of you did more to ease her pain than all the pharmaceutical cocktails fed into her veins.

As she lay in the hospice, watching the inevitable sunset of her life, she asked me for three things:

1.    To listen to the music of Duke Ellington (Come Sunday was her favorite) and Mozart.  We did and it was beautiful and serene.
2.    To make her laugh.  Well, that was never hard for me to do.
3.    And finally, to bring her a, “very cold” mind you, Stella Artois beer.  She even sat up a bit to drink it.

I can say about her something that is not oft said in our day and age – What a Woman!

I can tell you this – she loved us all deeply.

Je ne t’oublierai jamais.  Je t’aimerai toujours.
I will never forget you. I will always love you.

where i've been...

...has not been a good place, my darlings.

yesterday, it started with me yelling at the tv news anchor to SHUT UP! and degenerated from there to me just barely being civil to anyone. i have absolutely no patience or tolerance right now. maybe, it started with the saints losing and football sunday turning into a mass of bad behavior by too many coaches and a few players across the league. who knows? i don't.

not enough ruffage in my diet?
not enough sleep?

i don't know. i'm leaving too many things undone lately.

too much pressure?
laziness?

again, i don't know.

all i know is that 30 minutes ago, the MITM told me that if i was going to start the day off yelling at the news on my MAC, then maybe i needed to walk away from technology today or just watch home improvement shows...

i mean, really? who in their right mind argues with mike holmes on hgtv?

laissez les bons temp rouler! let the good times roll

just received a condolence call from a former neighbor of carmel/miss daisy. now, this woman was half miss daisy's age when they were neighbors. in fact, i'm almost certain she's  just a bit older than MY oldest child, but i digress... the lovely thing that she remembered most about being her neighbor was miss daisy coming home at 2am on a sunday morning from adaigo jazz club  and wondering,"what the hell is wrong with MY life, that my 80something year old neighbor is out partying and i'm at home?" all the MITM could say was thank you for making me smile! these are the stories that are sustaining him. all the fun and lovely memories people are sharing of good times with his momma.

and then, there's all of you.

your kind words, the music, the emails have been shared. you are all part of our life and all part of the memories we have of miss daisy in blogville. yes, my darlings, she knew all about all of you and loved all the funny things you said. she always asked if i was going to tell my friends about the parties or what was going on here on the plantation.

so promise us one thing, raise a glass this weekend in her honor and we'll raise one with you and to you all!

today i saw miss daisy

miss daisy is in hospice care now.

the MITM, his brother and sister agreed with the doctors that this was the best move possible for her. she is unplugged and unpoked and un-prodded and now actively dying.. as she said while i was there, is the end near?

i did make her laugh again which is all i needed.

one other thing happened that made me know she knew exactly who i was...she told me she remembered my family. when we would go to the brain doctor we'd practice memory games...she'd name my coconut krewe and who they were married or engaged to. and then the puppies, ghostface killah and moxie. then she'd name her other grandchildren.

she married her first sweetheart and so did i.

she was 19 when she married and so was i.

she had 4 children and so did i.

she was an only child and so am i.


i could make her laugh and i did again tonight.

there's just no easy way to say things aren't good.  miss daisy is still in the hospital. the news isn't positive, but there it is. the thought was, until early today, she would be released to a nursing home, but is no longer being contemplated. at least, not this weekend. so, as sister hope's daddy used to say, pray if you do and if you don't, whistle.

super nana will be here tomorrow for a couple of days. she was in nashville for a conference and as she said, too close not to come and visit. mr. moose is also planning a trip home as soon as he can get away. the coconut krewe keeps in close contact, so a visit is, as we call it around here, extras!

today is mr.moose's birthday! #3 son started celebrating on sunday with the obligatory donut celebration.  (it's actually a secret ritual that i've not participated in, but from what i can gather, it's the absolute best way to start birthday festivities!)

today is the 12th day

things are moving slowly downhill here. thank you all for the kind words of support here and via email. miss daisy is not doing well. she is scheduled to see her brain doctor on the 28th. there isn't much to say about her condition except the staff at the palazzo is keeping her comfortable. i just wanted all y'all to know.

due to circumstances...

there is very good news and very bad news around here, m'darlings...

seems the MITM and i are going to be grandparents!  captain chaos & Stretch aka The Girl are going to have a baby in february!!!!! they've also purchased their first home, as well!

there's more good news out on the west coast, but i haven't been given the OK to post any of that yet, so stay tuned for those announcements.

life has a way of giving you  kisses and hugs and then sucker punching you in the gut.

miss daisy has been in hospital since thursday. the MITM is there now because we still don't know what's going on or what the course of treatment is going to be from here on out. we're as prepared as any one can be, but what do you say? what can you do? what happens next? i can't help but think of my own mother and all that transpired 22 years ago and how if it hadn't been for the MITM, i don't know how i would have gotten through it all. i was an only child, so i had no siblings to help make the difficult decisions. i am glad he has his brother and sister to share that burden. right now, so much would be easier if we just KNEW what exactly was going on. i could (and at some point probably will) go on about medical reform in this country, but for now, i am asking all of you to keep good thoughts for miss daisy in whatever way you chose because i believe in my village and its power of collective good.

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
